The World Anti-Doping Agency ("WADA", President: Sir Craig Reedie) and Astellas Pharma Inc. ("Astellas", TSE: 4503, President and CEO: Yoshihiko Hatanaka) today announced a Global Collaborative Agreement aimed at preventing the misuse and abuse of drugs for doping purposes in sport. Doping in sports is primarily due to the misuse and abuse of over-the-counter drugs as well as developing compounds that are not yet well known or easily detected.

To support WADA in its efforts to address this issue, Astellas will identify compounds developed solely by WADA or its affiliates that may be used for doping purposes in sport. She will also collaborate in sharing relevant information to help WADA develop methods for the detection of these compounds. In addition, Astellas will work with WADA to minimize the risk of misuse of potentially doping compounds in clinical trials and prevent abuse.

"WADA is delighted to partner with Astellas in the prevention of the misuse and abuse of doping drugs in sport," said Sir Craig Reedie, President of WADA. This is a mutually beneficial arrangement. Above all, Astellas will inform WADA during the compound development stage of any potential for abuse in sport, and the Agency agrees to inform Astellas of all evidence of sourcing of its compounds on the black market. that she might find out. This partnership is based on the principle that the consequences of doping extend far beyond elite athletes and affect the whole of society. "

“Astellas is committed to ensuring the safe and effective use of its therapies, in the right setting,” says Dr.rKenji Yasukawa, Chief Strategy Officer of Astellas, and we are proud to be the first Japanese company to support WADA's efforts to prevent the misuse of medical products for doping purposes. Increasing sports performance through doping is considered a serious public health problem by the Sports Movement and public authorities around the world. It is essential that pharmaceutical companies tackle this important issue as well. "

Astellas' activities are in line with the guidelines that WADA and the International Federation of Medicines Industry (IFPMA) recently issued to help pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies increase their role in the fight against doping in the sport. These guidelines, entitled Elements to take into account: Identification of medical compounds with doping potential and sharing of information with WADA , include best practices for setting up a voluntary process to determine the risk of doping potential of compounds in the developmental stage, prior to commercialization.

These Things to consider are an extension of the Joint Declaration of Collaboration in the Fight against Doping which was signed by IFPMA and WADA in June 2010 and approved by the Biotechnology Industry Organization (OIB) in June 2011 with the aim of to thwart the most recent doping techniques.
