Good to know

In 1895, an American, William G. Morgan, director of physical activities for the YMCA of Holyoke, Massachusetts, invented Volley Ball from which Beach Volleyball originated.

The history of Beach Volleyball itself dates back to the year 1915, when a court was established by the Hawaii Outrigger Beach and Canoe Club on Wakiki Beach.

Originally conceived as a seaside activity, it began to take off in the 1920s, first in the United States and particularly in California on Santa Monica beach before setting out to conquer the world. Having become a competitive sport in 1947 in California, where the first two-player team tournament took place, it became more professional in the 1970s thanks to the arrival of sponsors and having gradually structured itself, was able to give rise to the held its first world championships in 1976. Demonstration sport at the Olympic Games in Barcelona (1992), it obtained from the International Olympic Committee in 1993 the status of official discipline and 24 men's and 16 women's teams were thus able to compete in the Olympic Games. 'Atlanta to obtain the first Olympic medals in this discipline (1996).

Imposing movements on a sand surface and adaptability to uncontrollable external elements such as sun, wind, rain or even heat, it requires physical qualities, in particular strength, flexibility and endurance. Alternating different technical gestures (reception, pass, attack, defense), it requires a complete development of the player and calls on specific technical qualities.

Particularly spectacular and attractive, Beach Volleyball has its own characteristics and official rules, including the playing surface, the number of players and the contact with the ball. 2 teams of 2 players compete on an 8 x 16 m sand court. The ground is divided by a net of a regulation height. It is played in 2 winning sets of 21 points with 2 points difference and in the event of a tie, the players are separated by a decisive set of 15 points. It does not authorize any change of players and does not admit coaching. It allows a maximum of 3 contacts to return the ball to the opposing camp, the counter counting for a touch of the ball. The specific ball must be hit and can be played with all parts of the body.
