Tramadol joins the List of prohibited substances

Along with the publication of the 2023 Prohibited List, the World Anti-Doping Agency has confirmed the integration, from January 1, 2024, of Tramadol among the substances prohibited in competition.

A narcotic under surveillance

Some international federations, such as the UCI, had already taken the lead last year, while WADA had given time to its Prohibited List Expert Advisory Group of WADA to rule on this narcotic which was, however, included in its Monitoring program. The experts' report is clear. Wide use of tramadol in sports has been observed, well beyond therapeutic use.

Tramadol, depending on the dose, poses risks of physical dependence, opiate dependence and overdose in the general population. This risk is of concern and tramadol is therefore a controlled drug in many countries.

It was then clear that tramadol violated one of the main rules underlying the prohibition of a substance: the endangerment of the health of athletes. However, the report does not stop there and highlights the ability of tramadol to improve physical performance.

An added delay

However, due to the widespread use of the substance, WADA decided to grant an additional year before banning its use in competition. This delay will make it possible to multiply prevention and communication actions with athletes, their entourage and medical personnel.

It will also allow the scientific community will also have the time to convince athletes of the dangers of tramadol in the context of extra-therapeutic use and its anti-sporting nature. Sports authorities will be able to take advantage of this to develop educational tools for athletes and medical personnel.
